The new High-Torque Inline Lycoming Starter
from Sky-Tec

"The best starter we've used - PERIOD!"  This quote from the lead R&D/Experimental engineer at an industry-leading engine OEM begins to explain the overwhelming demand for our new High-Torque Inline Lycoming starter.  And now that production is in full swing, they are available and ON THE SHELF of Sky-Tec dealers for under $550!

Welcome to the home of the industry leader in lightweight starters for general aviation aircraft.  Over the past twelve years Sky-Tec has become the clear starter of choice for replacement aircraft starters and the first choice of aircraft manufacturers, engine rebuilders and aircraft owners alike.  Today there are more than 30,000 Sky-Tec starters in service helping our customers get their aircraft started quicker, easier, lighter and more reliably than with any other starter.

NO BENDIX

Sky-Tec starters are built with a "No-Bendix" design philosophy ridding Sky-Tec starters of all the troubles associated with worn and failing Bendix drives.

Flyweight™

Sky-Tec starters weigh up to ten pounds less than the original equipment starters they were designed to replace.

High Torque

Sky-Tec starters utilize significant gear reduction methods to produce a vast increase in available torque.  In addition, many models are designed to increase starting RPM by as much as 100% cutting your starting time in half - saving both battery life and wear on your engine and electrical system

Rugged Design

Sky-Tec starters are engineered to exceed engine TBO lifetimes and withstand the toughest operating environments.

Unmatched Customer Service

We are pilots and aircraft owners too.  We understand unique fit issues and can guide you through installations and troubleshooting.  We sincerely like to hear from our customers.  With Sky-Tec you don't have to go it alone.  Our vast network of Dealers and in-house technical specialists are ready and available to help you fit, install and maintain peak performance of your Sky-Tec starter.

The leader

Ask around.  Find out what starter the pilots on your field are using.  Ask any Sky-Tec user what they think of their starter.  Chances are you won't have to look very far to find a very satisfied Sky-Tec customer.  And we promise to leave the selling to them.

If your aircraft has a pull-type starter, installation will require some modifications:

Your pull starter mechanically engages the starter drive while simultaneously supplying power to the starter motor.  The Sky-Tec C12ST2 engages electromechanically so you must do two things:

  • Order the "kit" (KCST2) which includes a C12ST2/S starter, push button, wiring harness, STC's and instructions.

  • Replace your pull-start "T-Handle" (or knob) with the push-button switch and wiring harness in the kit.

  • Cut-off the shaft in the rear of your engine upon which your pull-starter's pinon gear used to ride.  This can be done by following the STC modification instructions.

If your aircraft has been previously converted from a pull-starter:

Ah, this one's easy!  Just order a C12ST2/S from your favorite dealer, install and enjoy (we even include the gasket).  The /S will be a "short-nose" starter that will clear the previously cut-off pinon gear shaft inside the rear of the engine.

If your aircraft was manufactured with a push button (or mag switch) starter:

Another easy one.  Order a stock C12ST2 starter from your favorite dealer, install and enjoy.  We even include the gasket!  The stock starter has a small dowel boss on the nose of the starter that will reside within the needle bearing inside the rear of the engine.  The only purpose for that dowel is to keep your bearing needles from falling out.  There is no need to pull the bearing.

What if you're unsure which engine you have?

Take off the accessory case on the rear of your engine.  Look inside, toward the top most area of the cavity.  If you see a hole (actually, that's the inside of a needle bearing), order the stock C12ST2.  If you see a flush-cut shaft, order a short-nose (C12ST2/S).  If you see a shaft, order the KCST2 conversion kit.

Safe for ALL TCM starter adaptors!

The new CxxST3 starter has been redesigned from the ground-up to achieve incomparable, aggressive design goals:

  • Incredibly low weight (only 6.5 lbs!);

  • Aggressive gear reduction for high torque w/low current draw;

  • A patent-pending, common-sense design that eliminates the majority of "broken spring" scenarios that occur so frequently on TCM's  new "improved style" (their quotes, not ours) starter adaptors;

  • Nearly instantaneous release of the starter adaptor wrap spring virtually eliminates starter-induced adaptor wear;

  • Approved and recommended for ALL starter adaptors ("classic style", "improved style", "permold", "sand cast", etc.);

  • A simple, easy-to-install, bolt-off/bolt-on, maintenance-free starter that fits the entire "large" series Continental engines (with right-angle starter adapters) from O-300-D through TSIO-550 engines;

  • Highest torque possible with minimal current draw (you're going to LOVE how it cranks those Continental-powered Cessna's with the battery way in the back!);

  • Attractively designed and affordably produced making it the first and only choice in lightweight large Teledyne Continental engine starters.

How is the Sky-Tec starter different?

The ST3 starter incorporates an innovative clutching system which enables the starter to engage the TCM starter adaptor while powered and completely disengage the powerful permanent magnet motor while the starter is unpowered.  This positive disengagement allows the TCM starter adaptor to fully unwrap under all normal operating conditions thus greatly prolonging starter adaptor life.

How do I know which one to buy?

This one is pretty easy!  If your TCM engine has a right-angle starter adaptor at the rear of the engine, chances are this starter is the right one for your application.  Consult our extensive aircraft fit guide just to be sure.

Original Flyweight™
LS & PM Models
Description The newest member of the Sky-Tec product family features a high-torque, wound field motor.  Its light weight (of course) - only 9.4 lbs. - and advanced design is capable of replacing nearly all original equipment as well as certified replacement starters on non-geared Lycoming engine-powered aircraft*.   The key to the starter’s broad adaptability is its compact, inline solenoid/motor arrangement that fits well within the profile of Lycoming’s original equipment starters.

* Will not fit newer C206 (those take a factory OEM Sky-Tec 149-24PM) or any B60 aircraft (those take a Sky-Tec 149-24HT).

The original High-Torque is where it all started with Sky-Tec.  Developed (and redeveloped) over nearly twenty years now, the newest, lightweight version of the Original High-Torque is a perfect solution for helicopter, bush plane and charter operations requiring a rugged design, maximum reliability & service life.  Designed to spin the prop twice as fast during start, the Original High-Torques feature an environmentally sealed case, rugged all metal gears and steel ball bearings, a heavy-duty drive and rugged field-wound motor.  The product synonymous with the Sky-Tec name, The Original Flyweight™  provides unmatched value in Lycoming replacement starters.  These are our most popular starter models (Models PM & LS).  They feature permanent magnet motors unmatched value, reliable performance, high-torque, a ten pound weight savings over stock starters and twice the spin of old, heavyweight OEM starters resulting in faster and easier engine starts - especially improving hot engine start performance.

The LS/PM models are the flagship of the Sky-Tec product family.  They are identical to each other in composition and performance, however  LS models have the solenoid at the 2:30 o’clock position (as viewed from the front) and the PM models have the solenoid at the 7:30 position.  Select the right model for your aircraft based on the location of accessories around your starter using the fit guide.  When unsure, purchase the High-Torque Inline starter - it WILL fit!

Our Lycoming starters also feature an integrated starter solenoid for homebuilt applications not wishing to install a separate firewall solenoid. Click here for details.

LS/PM models weigh 7.8 lbs and HT models weigh 8.5 lbs. The new high-torque inline weighs 9.4 lbs.

The time-tested HT Model continues to be a top seller in applications needing additional ruggedness, performance and reliability.  It's nose design makes it a good fit for many tight cowling applications and its performance makes it the original starter of choice for large engine applications (Lycoming 720 series-powered aircraft).  The HT's performance characteristics are nearly identical to those of the HTI listed in the chart above.

The new High-Torque Inline starter is the recommended starter for short-wing Pipers, retractable Cessnas, helicopters, rugged operations and harsh environments or applications with minimal clearance in front of and around the starter.
